A Fresh Start with W-2: Londan’s Journey to Stability

She helped me believe in myself and motivated me to want more for my life.

When Londan moved from Portland, Oregon, to Platteville, Wisconsin, she was seeking a fresh start for herself, her four children, and her 16-year-old brother, for whom she was responsible for. Life wasn’t easy—she was homeless, living in a shelter, and feeling overwhelmed. But that all began to change when she learned about the Wisconsin Works (W-2) program.

“Joining the W-2 program happened during one of the toughest times in my life,” Londan recalls. With guidance from a shelter worker, she applied for the program, gaining essential income and a sense of hope.

At first, Londan didn’t have big dreams—she just wanted to make it through each day. But her W-2 worker saw her potential and encouraged her to set ambitious goals. “She helped me believe in myself and motivated me to want more for my life,” Londan shares.

With support from W-2, Londan tackled some of life’s biggest challenges, including balancing her responsibilities as a single mom, legal guardian, and, at the time, an expectant mother. “Managing everything while trying to stay positive was intimidating,” she admits. But the consistent encouragement she received gave her the strength to persevere.

Through the program, Londan achieved several major milestones, including obtaining her high school equivalency diploma with the help of an education navigator. She also completed job skills trainings and workshops that prepared her for future opportunities.

Today, Londan is enrolled in college, working toward an associate’s degree in accounting with support from the FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) program to assist with tuition costs. Her vision for the future is clear: “I want a stable career that makes me financially secure so I can provide a simple, comfortable lifestyle for my family.”

Londan’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of support. “I’m so grateful for the W-2 program and look forward to using what I’ve learned to keep moving forward,” she says.

Her journey is an inspiring testament to the difference programs like W-2 can make for individuals and families striving for a brighter future.
