Baking Her Dreams Come True: Marissa’s Path to Culinary Excellence

The WIOA program helped me to better understand how to navigate college while making it less stressful and helping me financially.

When we first met Marissa, she was navigating the challenges of high school and found it difficult to stay motivated with her schoolwork. Although she had great potential, she was in desperate need of support to stay on track. Recognizing this, her guidance counselor referred her to our Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, and the rest was history.

Our WIOA program, funded by the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board, is designed to help job seekers like Marissa access employment, education, training opportunities, and supportive services to succeed in today’s labor market. By working closely with her WIOA Career Services Specialist, James, Marissa began to uncover her true passions. She discovered that her dream was to earn a college degree and become a baker. With this newfound clarity, her next steps involved exploring college programs and finding ways to fund her education.

When Marissa crossed the graduation finish line, James was there to celebrate and guide her through what was next. Marissa enrolled at Moraine Park Technical College for their Culinary Assistant Program. As an active participant in our WIOA program, Marissa received tuition and book assistance, which eased her financial worries and allowed her to focus on more important things, like studying. Additionally, James provided unwavering guidance and support as she navigated her new college journey.

As the semesters flew by, Marissa earned her Technical Diploma. Her enthusiasm for school and the culinary field was infectious, leading her to pursue her current goal: furthering her education in the Culinary Arts Associate Degree program at the same college. This program is allowing her to deepen her skills and knowledge in baking, a field she has grown to love.

“Marissa is a very studious individual who has a passion for learning,” shares her WIOA Career Services Specialist, James. “She cares about improving her future and is very motivated to start a great career.”

Marissa’s commitment to her education and career is paying off. Her journey from being a high school student with an IEP to becoming a dedicated college student and aspiring baker is a testament to her determination, and she is well on her way to achieving her dreams.

Congratulations, Marissa! We can’t wait to taste your baking marvels!
