In the heart of Fond du Lac, a young woman named Mckenna took her first courageous step toward independence. Stuck in a cycle of unemployment while living with her parents, she knew it was time to change her circumstances but wasn’t quite sure where to start. That’s when she discovered the WIOA Youth program, a beacon of hope that guided her toward a brighter future.
Mckenna approached the program with determination, eager to explore her true potential. Her hard work and ability to communicate openly stood out to her WIOA Career Services Specialist, James. Recognizing her desire to establish her independence and earn enough money to buy her first car, he presented her with an incredible opportunity: a paid work experience at a local social services organization, We EmpowHER.
From the moment she stepped into We EmpowHER, Mckenna found her passion. She volunteered her time and skills to assist with programming that created a safe and supportive environment for women and children. Here, she inspired participants to strive for their best selves while gaining invaluable experience. Mckenna also played a vital role in orchestrating events for the organization and managing donations from sponsors, all of which deepened her connection to the community.
The impact of this work experience was profound. Mckenna not only thrived in her role but also formed meaningful relationships, built her resume, and discovered her strengths and interests.
Thanks to her hard work and the income she earned, Mckenna achieved a significant milestone: she bought her very first car. This purchase symbolized more than just freedom of transportation; it represented her journey toward self-reliance and independence.
Mckenna’s newfound confidence has instilled in her a desire to continue her volunteer work with We EmpowHER. She is now exploring further meaningful work experiences while building her credit, all with a goal of finding her own place to live independently. With each step, Mckenna embodies the courage to pursue her dreams and the resilience to overcome challenges.
Mckenna’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder that with the right support—like that provided by the WIOA Youth program—anyone can redefine their path and achieve independence. Her story illustrates the strength of community and the power of believing in oneself. As she continues on this journey, we can all take inspiration from Mckenna’s determination, knowing that every step forward brings us closer to our own aspirations.
And with the tools and support from WIOA, she is carving out a future that is truly her own. Congratulations, Mckenna!
