FSET has provided support and resources for me to go back to school to be an electrician and continue working on starting a small business for remodeling houses.
When Tommy first connected with us through a referral from his IM agency and FoodShare, he was facing a tough chapter in life. Unemployed and back living with his parents, he was ready for change—but unsure where to start. What he did know was that he wanted a job, his own place, and a better future.
That’s where the FSET program came in.
Resource Building Blocks
Tommy enrolled in our FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) program to meet his work requirements for FoodShare, but quickly found that the program offered far more than just a way to stay eligible for benefits—it was a stepping stone toward his dreams. With the support of his FSET worker, Tommy began mapping out a plan not just for employment, but for a career.
He shared with us that his dream was simply: “to be successful.”
For Tommy, success meant two things: starting his own remodeling and construction business and becoming a licensed electrician. His FSET case manager introduced him to CAP Services’ small business program, opening the door to the tools and resources he needed to build a strong foundation for self-employment.
Together, Tommy and his case manager worked hand-in-hand on a road map to help him visualize the steps ahead:
- Choose a career path he’s passionate about in the skilled trades
- Go back to school to gain the necessary training
- Land a job or apprenticeship in his chosen field
- Work on his small business in remodeling during his free time
Tommy’s Vision Locked In
Tommy is now laser-focused on becoming a journeyman electrician, aiming to find an apprenticeship where he can gain hands-on experience while continuing his education. His ultimate goal? To balance his work in the trades with owning a thriving remodeling business—turning his dreams into a sustainable reality. In fact, we’re happy to report that Tommy has already been booking remodeling jobs since starting up his business and will be starting work soon! He’s so excited and so are we!
We’ve seen firsthand how hardworking, dedicated, and personable Tommy is. With the strong support of his family, his wife, and his FSET teams, Tommy is more confident than ever in his future. He knows what he wants to do—and he’s putting in the work to make it happen.
