Recently, the community gathered at Spoons Café in Wausau for a truly special occasion—the final benchmark event for our students in the Workforce Advancement Initiative (WAI) 2.0 Culinary Boot Camp. These budding chefs, part of a collaborative effort between Northcentral Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, Forward Service Corporation, and Northcentral Technical College, prepared and served a full-course meal as part of their capstone project—and they didn’t just meet expectations, they doubled them.
Breaking Records and Making Meals
The students cooked and served over 180 entrées—nearly twice the number ever served at a single culinary event in Spoons Café history. Attendees included local employers, community leaders, and representatives from Public Works and various public service organizations, all eager to see (and taste!) the hard work the students have been putting in throughout the program.

The event was such a success that it caught the attention of local media, with the students featured on both Wausau-area news stations. It was a proud moment for everyone involved and a testament to the impact of hands-on, community-driven training programs.
From Training to Transformation
These students are nearing the finish line of their culinary journey, set to officially graduate on Monday, August 11. Through the support of WAI grant, each student not only gained essential culinary skills but was also connected to paid work experiences at local restaurants across the Wausau community.

While working with their dedicated WIOA Career Specialist, Nicky, students were successfully enrolled in the WAI 2.0 program, where they completed 180 hours of paid work experience and received career coaching, job readiness training, and a strong foundation for entering the food service industry. As a reward for their dedication, students will receive a $1,000 incentive, along with a professional knife set and uniform provided by NTC.
This celebration is more than just a graduation milestone—it’s a launchpad for these students’ futures in the culinary world. Congratulations to the WAI 2.0 Culinary Boot Camp cohort, and hats off to everyone who made it happen!
