At Forward Service Corporation, we know that no two journeys look the same. Every individual brings their own goals, challenges, and strengths—and it’s their determination that drives lasting change. DeEvin’s story is a powerful example of how perseverance, self-advocacy, and a willingness to put in the work can turn a dream into a reality.
When DeEvin joined the FSET (FoodShare Employment & Training) program in October 2024, he came with a clear interest in construction—and an even clearer commitment to building a better future for himself. His Case Manager, Jackie, immediately recognized his motivation and referred him to the Highway Construction Skills Training (HCST) program, knowing it had helped others gain traction in the trades.
Inspired by the success stories he heard, DeEvin didn’t hesitate. He committed to the training, pushed himself to succeed, and by November, had proudly graduated from the program. His determination paid off quickly—he secured a job as a Flagger, earning $22 an hour!
But even while pursuing this new role, DeEvin never lost sight of his bigger goal: earning his CDL.
It wasn’t just something he talked about. It was something he actively worked toward. He began researching CDL training opportunities on his own, eventually identifying a promising program at Fox Valley Technical College. With his next goal in sight, he brought the information to his Case Managers, Jackie and Illia, asking, “What can we do to make this happen?”
That initiative sparked a true collaboration. Through the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) program, Illia helped him begin planning next steps. Then, while searching for funding options, Illia discovered a scholarship from St. Vincent de Paul that offered up to $700 to cover tuition, books, fees, and testing. Once DeEvin was awarded the scholarship, Illia reached out to Jackie to see if FSET could help cover the remaining costs.
Thanks to DeEvin’s persistent efforts and Forward Service Corporation’s strong partnership between programs, the final financial pieces came together.
Now, DeEvin is well on his way to earning his CDL, and his story doesn’t stop there. Grateful for the encouragement and support that helped him move forward, he’s begun sharing his experience with others—encouraging friends to connect with FSC and explore their own possibilities.
What makes DeEvin’s journey so inspiring isn’t just the programs he participated in—it’s the way he took ownership of his future, sought out opportunities, and stayed focused on his goals, even when things weren’t easy. He reminds us all that success doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built—step by step—through effort, resilience, and a refusal to give up.
