When Mark first walked into the FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) program, he wasn’t just looking for a job—he was trying to find his footing again.
At the time, he was unemployed, living in temporary housing, and dealing with serious financial stress. Like many people in that position, it wasn’t just about money. The uncertainty had started to take a toll on his confidence and mental well-being, making it hard to know what step to take next.
“I honestly just hoped the program could help with basics like food or gas,” Mark shared. “I didn’t expect much more.”
But what he found was something different.
More Than Just the Basics
Through FSET, Mark gained access to things he didn’t realize he needed just as much—structure, support, and a positive environment. He started coming into our office regularly, using the computer lab almost every day and slowly rebuilding a routine.
At first, he wasn’t even sure he should be there. He told his case worker, Emily, that he didn’t want to take a spot from someone “more in need.” But Emily reassured him: he belonged there, and it was okay to ask for help.
That moment mattered.
With guidance from Emily and the team, Mark began working on practical next steps—updating his resume, learning how to job search in today’s world, and thinking more intentionally about his future. He completed Job Search Essentials training, attended Career Connections sessions, and worked closely with a job developer to explore opportunities.
Step by step, things started to shift.
Building Confidence, One Step at a Time
As Mark put in the work, something else started to grow—his confidence. “I saw Mark’s confidence continue to grow,” Emily shared. “Each time we talked, he seemed more sure of himself and what he could achieve.”
He created both a functional and chronological resume, giving him tools to present his experience in the best way possible. And through a referral to ABR Staffing, he landed full-time employment—an important milestone that helped him regain financial stability and belief in himself.
But Mark wasn’t just thinking about the present. He had a bigger vision.
Looking Ahead to What’s Next
From the beginning, Mark talked about his goal of relocating to Oneida County and building a stable life there. What once felt uncertain now feels within reach.
Thanks to his hard work and consistent progress, Mark has been approved to make that move. He’s already taking steps to make the transition smooth by continuing his job search in that area.
Now, his goals are bigger. A permanent home. A new career path. A fresh start in a place he’s excited about. And most importantly, he believes he can get there.
A Fresh Start, Built on Support and Self-Belief
Mark’s journey is a reminder that sometimes the first step isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about showing up and starting.
Through FSET, he found more than just job search help. He found encouragement, direction, and a support system that helped him rebuild not just his resume, but his confidence.
“Without taking those first steps with this staff,” Mark said, “I wouldn’t be pursuing these bigger and better goals so quickly.”
Now, instead of wondering what’s next, Mark is moving toward it—with purpose, confidence, and a plan.
