Finding Stability, One Step at a Time: Farrah’s Journey Through Wisconsin Works

Thank you so much for everything you did for me, for your tremendous help, and for being so kind and empathetic. I will always remember you as my best W-2 worker. I am truly grateful to you.

When Farrah walked through our doors once again, she carried the weight of uncertainty, fear, and the responsibility of providing for her family. As a previous Wisconsin Works (W-2) participant, she returned in a moment she described as being “in desperate need of help” with “nowhere else to go.”

Unemployed, without reliable transportation, and living off the bus route, Farrah was doing everything she could just to hold her household together. She was struggling to make ends meet and needed support to rebuild a path forward.

A Program Designed to Support Parents

Wisconsin Works (W-2) exists for moments exactly like these. The program helps parents overcome employment barriers, gain stability, and secure family-supporting wages through personalized case management and practical resources. Whether the challenge is job loss, limited income, transportation barriers, or the need for training, W-2 steps in to provide a foundation for long-term success.

For Farrah, that support began immediately. She received a family stabilization payment upon enrollment, helping her manage urgent needs while she looked for work. Her case manager helped her focus on realistic goals: Find full-time employment, secure reliable transportation, and eventually acquire a vehicle of her own.

Step-by-Step Support Toward Stability

Farrah worked closely with her case manager to rebuild her confidence and prepare for the workforce. Through W-2, she received help with job searching and employment coaching, interview preparation, and clothing and gas vouchers to ease the financial pressure during her job hunt.

Understanding that transportation was Farrah’s biggest barrier, her case manager referred her to the WETAP program, offering a path toward purchasing a car once she secured a full-time job.

But support didn’t just stop with Farrah. Her son was also referred to our Youth Education Navigator, who is helping him pay for and complete driver’s education: another huge step toward long-term family independence.

A Full-Time Job and a Brighter Future

With determination and consistent support, Farrah landed a full-time job as a bindery assistant at a local print shop. While it may not be her dream job, she knows this is a powerful step forward—a steady income, a full-time schedule, and a chance to move into a higher-paying shift in the future.

Her next big milestone: purchasing a car through WETAP so she can take full control of her commute, her schedule, and her career opportunities.

The Power of Wisconsin Works

Farrah’s journey is a powerful reminder of how life-changing the W-2 program can be. For parents facing barriers like unemployment, lack of transportation, or financial strain, Wisconsin Works provides more than assistance. It offers hope, confidence, and the tools to secure family-supporting wages that move households toward lasting independence.
