Finding Strength, Support, and Success: How the WIOA Program Helped Britani Achieve Her Dream Career

Before enrolling, I felt stressed every day, anxious, overwhelmed, and even considered quitting school. After enrolling, I felt relieved, supported, and excited about what the future holds.

When Britani first learned about the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, she was a busy single mother balancing work, school, and parenting. The idea of adding one more responsibility seemed daunting. But when a friend in her Substance Use Disorder Counseling (SUDC) program shared their positive experience with WIOA, Britani decided to give it a closer look.

“I first heard about the program through a friend who was also enrolled in my SUDC program,” she recalled. “Their experience encouraged me to look into it and get connected. I chose to enroll because of the amazing benefits it offers to students pursuing a career in Substance Use Disorder Counseling. This program gave me the support I needed to grow academically and professionally, and it ultimately helped me secure the position I hold today.”

That decision would prove to be life-changing.

The Power of Support

From the start, Britani felt that WIOA offered more than just financial assistance: it provided a foundation of encouragement and personal connection. She credits much of her success to her Career Planner, Erika, who became a steady source of guidance throughout her journey.

“My experience with Erika was more than I could have hoped for,” Britani said. “She supported me not only with school-related needs but also during personal struggles. She took the time to listen when life felt overwhelming, and I am extremely thankful for her guidance and encouragement.”

For students like Britani, who juggle multiple responsibilities, having someone to lean on can make the difference between giving up and pushing forward.

Overcoming Challenges

Britani’s path to becoming a Substance Use Disorder Counselor was far from easy. She carried a full course load—five classes at a time—while also working multiple jobs to support herself and her young son. The stress was immense.

“One of my biggest challenges was balancing multiple jobs while taking five classes and raising my son as a single mother,” she said. “Thanks to this program, I was able to cut back on work hours, which allowed me to focus more on school and also spend quality time with my son.”

The WIOA program gave her the breathing room she needed. With financial support for tuition, books, and other expenses, Britani no longer had to choose between her education and her family. She could devote her energy to both, without the constant fear of burnout.

Achieving Her Dream

Britani’s determination, paired with the resources of the WIOA program, helped her reach a milestone she once doubted was possible: earning her Associate Degree in Substance Use Disorder Counseling.

Her hard work quickly paid off. She was hired at Apricity – Mooring House, a respected organization where she now supports others on their recovery journeys. For Britani, it’s not just a job. It’s the fulfillment of a dream.

“My dream was to become a Substance Use Disorder Counselor, and with the help of this program, I was able to achieve that dream,” she said proudly.

A New Outlook on Life

Looking back, Britani reflects on how drastically her life has changed since enrolling in WIOA. The stress and anxiety that once weighed heavily on her have been replaced by excitement and confidence.

“Before enrolling, I felt stressed every day, anxious, overwhelmed, and even considered quitting school,” she admitted. “After enrolling, I felt relieved, supported, and excited about what the future holds.”

Her journey shows how powerful programs like WIOA can be, not only in helping people achieve academic and career goals, but also in giving them hope and stability during life’s toughest challenges.

Paying It Forward

Britani’s story is one of perseverance, resilience, and gratitude. She is proof that with the right support system, barriers can be overcome and dreams can be realized. Today, she’s not just providing for her son and thriving in her career—she’s also making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

For those considering whether WIOA might be the right step, Britani’s story serves as an inspiring reminder: success is possible, even when the odds feel stacked against you. With determination, support, and the right opportunities, the future can be brighter than you ever imagined.
