For Ian, finding a job wasn’t simply about getting back to work. He needed a career that could provide something more lasting: a reliable schedule, meaningful income, opportunities for advancement, and the stability his family could count on.
After a period of unemployment and inconsistent scheduling in previous positions, Ian was ready for a change. Although he already possessed a valuable credential—a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)—he needed help turning that qualification into a sustainable career path.
That’s where our Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program came in.
Turning Credentials Into a Career
Ian was referred to WIOA through the Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) program’s reemployment sessions. When he enrolled, he had several immediate goals. He needed to renew his expired FedMed card, update his resume, find a position with a predictable schedule, and explore training or apprenticeship opportunities that could support his long-term career growth.
With guidance from Ilia, his WIOA Career Services Specialist, Ian began taking a more strategic approach to his job search.
Ian completed comprehensive career assessments to clarify his strengths, interests, and employment goals. He also completely overhauled his resume, transforming it into a modern, professional document that emphasized his technical background and commercial driving credentials.
Most importantly, Ian began looking beyond simply finding his next job. He was building a career plan.
“Ian is highly motivated, responsible, and proactive about his career growth,” Ilia says. “He is an excellent communicator who takes direction well and genuinely cares about establishing long-term stability for his household.”
Staying Focused When Plans Change
Ian’s journey had its share of setbacks, but rather than becoming discouraged, Ian adapted.
A job offer fell through, creating another obstacle during a challenging period of unemployment. With support from WIOA, he adjusted his employment strategy and focused more heavily on opportunities in local trucking and utility sectors.
His persistence paid off when he secured a full-time position as a Tow Truck Driver with Glenn’s Towing.
The position provides Ian with weekly pay and full benefits, giving him the dependable employment he was seeking while opening the door to continued professional development.
For Ian, the new position represents more than a paycheck. It is a foundation for his family’s future.
Building a Future With Room to Grow
Ian is already looking toward his next career milestone. He is currently completing an advanced, employer-funded WreckMaster certification class that will prepare him to move into heavy-duty recovery vehicle operation.
His vision for the future has also expanded beyond his own career.
Ian is working with FSC to help his wife enroll in WIOA this fall, as well. Together, they hope she can pursue virtual project management training and earn her Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) credential.
Ilia has seen firsthand how much Ian has grown throughout his enrollment.
