A Vision for a Better Future
Taylor’s journey into healthcare is a story of determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family and future.
A mother of four, Taylor already held an Associate Degree in Business, but she knew her true passion lay elsewhere. Motivated by a desire to help others and advocate for patients, she made the bold decision to pursue a career in nursing. Inspired by her own experiences with healthcare providers, Taylor wanted to become the kind of professional who could make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and their families.
At the same time, she was seeking greater financial stability and long-term career growth for her household. Those goals led her to enroll in our Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program last June.
Overcoming Financial and Personal Challenges
When Taylor began her educational journey, she faced significant hurdles.
Both she and her husband were on workers’ compensation due to workplace injuries, creating financial uncertainty at home. Taylor was employed part-time as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), but her hours were limited and her income fluctuated depending on her assigned duties. Delayed pay cycles made budgeting even more difficult for a family already working hard to make ends meet.
In addition to those challenges, Taylor needed costly nursing textbooks, clinical supplies, and reliable technology to succeed in school. She was completing coursework using an aging laptop borrowed from her sister that had to remain plugged in constantly due to a dead battery. Unexpected household expenses, including mandatory property maintenance costs, added further strain.
Despite these obstacles, Taylor refused to let circumstances dictate her future.
Persistence Creates Opportunity
One of Taylor’s greatest strengths is her ability to advocate for herself and pursue solutions relentlessly.
Whenever barriers appeared, she took action. She diligently researched community resources, secured assistance programs for her family, and pursued every opportunity available to support her educational goals. When one potential funding source became uncertain, she immediately sought alternative pathways rather than allowing the setback to derail her plans.
Through FSC’s WIOA program, Taylor received guidance identifying funding resources and assistance with required educational expenses, including textbooks. She also connected with community partners and successfully obtained a personal laptop through Techquity, eliminating a major technology barrier that had complicated her studies.
At the same time, Taylor balanced demanding clinical rotations, family responsibilities, and employment while maintaining her focus on graduation.
Achieving Her Nursing Goals
Taylor’s hard work paid off.
She successfully completed her clinical requirements and graduated from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program. Her strong performance throughout her training demonstrated both her commitment to excellence and her passion for patient care.
Following graduation, Taylor transitioned from her unpredictable CNA position into a more stable role as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Bellin Hospital. The move represented a major milestone in her career journey and provided increased security for her family.
Taylor also developed a comprehensive strategy for preparing for the NCLEX, a standardized exam required to obtain a nursing license and legally practice in the US. Using recommendations from WIOA staff, she incorporated digital study platforms, practice exams, and library resources into a disciplined study plan designed to maximize her success.
And it worked – this June, Taylor passed the NCLEX on her first attempt.
Building Toward an Even Bigger Dream
While earning her LPN credential was a tremendous accomplishment, Taylor views it as just the beginning.
She has already mapped out the next stages of her healthcare career, building momentum by completing prerequisite coursework and preparing to enter the Registered Nurse (RN) Associate Degree program at NWTC.
Her long-term plan includes earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), pursuing specialized certifications, and ultimately achieving her dream of working in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She is also interested in expanding her expertise through additional credentials.
Today, Taylor stands as a highly skilled healthcare professional with a clear academic and career roadmap. What began as a vision for a better future has become a reality built through persistence, self-advocacy, and hard work.
