From Discipline to Career Stability: Tyler’s HCST Success Story

Some success stories are loud and fast. Others are built steadily, day by day, through discipline, focus, and follow-through.

Our Highway Construction Skills Training (HCST) program prepares individuals for construction careers by combining hands-on training, industry-recognized certifications, and real-world expectations of the job. Trainees learn not only how to follow safety protocols, but also how to show up on time, communicate professionally, work as part of a crew, and adapt to demanding environments.

For Tyler, who entered the program with no prior construction experience, HCST provided both the technical foundation and the confidence to step onto a jobsite ready to contribute.

When Tyler graduated from the HCST program in June 2019, he exemplified a quiet and methodical work ethic throughout the six-week training experience. He didn’t seek the spotlight. Instead, he absorbed the fundamentals, respected the process, and committed himself fully to learning the trade. That same mindset would go on to define his career in the heavy highway industry.

In 2021, Tyler began working with Hoffman Construction on the Foxconn Project in Racine. That opportunity opened the door to the heavy highway industry and helped him see firsthand the range of career paths available. Later that year, he joined Northeast Asphalt of the Walbec Group as a flagger. From that vantage point, Tyler gained a clear view of the opportunities ahead—and he pounced on them.

Just one season later, Tyler advanced into a Laborer/C-Card holder position, launching a four-year apprenticeship that would shape his professional future. Through dedication and persistence, he mastered a wide range of equipment and responsibilities, including pavers, rollers, skid steer, broom truck, shuttle buggy, and tack and water truck operations. Each new skill reflected his willingness to learn and his commitment to becoming a well-rounded, reliable professional.

Like many in the highway construction field, Tyler spent time on the road, working away from home to build experience and secure long-term stability. Life away from family wasn’t easy, but Tyler approached it with purpose. He understood that the sacrifices he made early on were investments in the future—creating opportunities that would ultimately support his spouse and children. With competitive pay, full benefits, and a clear career trajectory, the work provided more than a paycheck; it provided security and peace of mind.

Tyler’s journey is a testament to character, integrity, and professionalism. From HCST trainee to skilled apprentice and industry professional, his story shows what’s possible when preparation meets perseverance.
