From Hardship to Hope: Bobbie Jo’s Journey to Becoming a Paramedic

I could go back to school and get a job I am passionate about.

Life can take unexpected turns, but for those with determination, dreams are never out of reach. Bobbie Jo’s story is a testament to resilience, proving that with the right support and a relentless spirit, anything is possible.

A Career Detour: Facing Unemployment

Bobbie Jo had built a fulfilling career as a wellness director. However, when she suddenly lost employment, the financial strain made it difficult to keep up with housing expenses. As a devoted mother, she knew she had to find a way forward—not just for herself, but for her family.

Seeking Support: The Role of W-2 and WIOA

Bobbie Jo turned to the Wisconsin Works (W-2) program, a resource she had used before when personal barriers made it difficult to maintain stability. This time, she sought assistance to regain her footing and pursue a long-held dream: becoming a paramedic.

Through W-2, Bobbie Jo received emergency assistance to cover overdue housing costs. She also needed financial support to pursue the necessary education and training for a new career. Recognizing her ambition, her W-2 case manager referred her to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, which could provide additional funding for schooling.

“I could go back to school and get a job I am passionate about,” Bobbie Jo said. “With the W-2 funding, I could follow my dreams.”

A Dream in Motion: EMT Training and Beyond

Bobbie Jo’s passion for helping others fueled her determination to enter the emergency medical field. She took her first steps by enrolling in an EMT program, with plans to continue her studies and become a paramedic. With assistance from W-2 and WIOA, she secured funding for crucial training, including a CPR certification and the final exams needed to advance in her studies.

Her dedication never wavered. From day one, she remained focused on her goal, embracing every opportunity to move closer to a stable, fulfilling career. Her willingness to reach out for help and take proactive steps made all the difference in her success.

“Willing, able, and determined is how I would describe Bobbie Jo as she started her journey with W-2,” Bobbie Jo’s case manager Karen shared. “Throughout her journey, she was dedicated, keeping her eye focused on where she wanted to be and what she wanted to complete. It is her determination that will help her keep making her dreams come true.”

A Future Full of Promise

Bobbie Jo’s journey is far from over—her next goal is to complete her paramedic training and establish a sustainable career in emergency response. Her story is one of perseverance, proving that setbacks don’t define us; our response to them does.

The Power of Support and Determination

Bobbie Jo’s experience highlights the impact of programs like W-2 and WIOA, which provide essential resources to individuals striving for self-sufficiency. With the right guidance, financial support, and unwavering determination, she transformed a period of uncertainty into an opportunity for growth.

Her case manager summed it up best: “I am honored to have been a part of her fabulous success and look forward to hearing about her future endeavors. I wish her all the success the world can bring.”
