From HCST Classroom to Lambeau Field: How Jonathan Built a Career in Construction

With a laser-focused, no-nonsense, can-do attitude, Jonathan stood out in the April 2024 Highway Construction Skills Training (HCST) class. From day one of the six-week program, he approached the opportunity with purpose, discipline, and an unmistakable drive to succeed. His instructor, Ranard, observed that Jonathan consistently demonstrated both technical aptitude and professionalism, qualities HCST aims to develop in every participant.

Throughout the course, Jonathan excelled in classroom learning and hands-on application alike. He arrived prepared, asked insightful questions, and quickly applied feedback to improve his skills. His exceptional performance testifies both to his personal commitment and to the strength of the HCST curriculum, which emphasizes real-world readiness and accountability.

How the HCST Program Prepared Jonathan for the Workforce

Upon completing the program, Jonathan took a bold leap of faith into the construction industry. He was officially recognized as an apprenticed carpenter by the North Central State Regional Carpenters Association, marking a major milestone early in his career.

Employed by Appleton Lathing Company, he spent a full season working on one of the most iconic construction projects in Wisconsin history: the Lambeau Field remodel.

Contributing to a project of that scale required precision, teamwork, and reliability. Jonathan rose to the challenge, demonstrating the confidence and competence he developed through HCST training.

Building Experience Through Real-World Opportunities

In his second season, Jonathan built momentum by accepting a new opportunity with Schleis Floor Covering, Inc. This role took him throughout Upper Michigan, exposing him to diverse job sites and expanding his technical skill set. Rather than settling into familiar routines, Jonathan embraced the chance to travel and grow—an attitude strongly encouraged throughout the HCST program.

His adaptability and work ethic allowed him to thrive in new environments, reinforcing his reputation as a dependable and motivated apprentice. These experiences further solidified the foundation he gained during his HCST training and helped prepare him for long-term success in the skilled trades.

Certifications and Career Growth as an HCST Apprentice

Jonathan’s commitment to excellence is reflected in his extensive list of certifications as a second-year apprentice. These include Reading Blueprints and Designs, Infection Control Risk Assessment (CRA), Site Development, Metal Framing, EPIC (Enhancing Professionalism in Construction), Floor Covering Foundations 1, Firestop Installation, and OSHA 30 & Safety Equipment.

Each certification represents a step forward in both technical knowledge and professional development. Jonathan’s steady progress highlights how HCST equips participants not only to enter the workforce but to continue advancing, learning, and excelling long after the program ends.

A Success Story Rooted in HCST Training

Jonathan’s journey—from the HCST classroom to Lambeau Field and beyond—demonstrates what is possible when determination meets high-quality training and dedicated instruction. With guidance from instructors like Ranard, the HCST program provides participants with the skills, confidence, and pathways needed to build meaningful careers in the construction industry.

Jonathan’s success stands as a powerful example of HCST’s impact and a reminder that with the right training and mindset, long-term career growth is well within reach.
