When Stacey first walked through the doors of our office, she came quietly — reserved, cautious, and accompanied by her loyal service dog, Rou. She didn’t say much at first. But our staff knew that behind her silence was a story worth hearing, and a future worth fighting for.
Over time, and through the patient, consistent support of her FSET case manager Jackie, Stacey began to open up. What emerged was the portrait of a woman of remarkable strength — one who had faced tremendous hardship and was ready, with the right support, to build something new.
A Passion Redirected
For years, Stacey had found her purpose working with horses — a field she loved deeply. But as she looked ahead, Stacey felt drawn toward a new calling: working with people.
It wasn’t a small pivot. It required not just new skills, but a new sense of self. And it required practical support to make it possible.
That’s where our FSET (FoodShare Employment and Training) program got to work.
After enrolling in FSET, Stacey was connected with the YWCA Career Closet to obtain professional clothing for interviews and work. Staff helped her navigate the process of renewing her driver’s license — a critical step toward independence and employment. She also received support in renewing her CPR certification, opening doors to customer service and community-focused opportunities.
Throughout it all, FSET ensured that her service dog Rou could be accommodated, removing yet another barrier that might have stood in her way.
Turning Pain Into Purpose
What makes Stacey’s story particularly powerful is not just where she is going, but what she is choosing to do with where she has been.
As a survivor of human trafficking, Stacey carries experiences that no one should have to endure. But rather than letting those experiences define or defeat her, she is transforming them into fuel for advocacy and compassion. She hopes to work with individuals facing similar situations and be the voice of encouragement and the source of strength that she once needed herself.
Showing Up for Her Community
Stacey’s commitment to advocacy was on full display when she participated in the Wrap the Capitol in Red event — a powerful gathering dedicated to raising awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women. Her presence there was a testament to the kind of person she is: someone who shows up, who stands alongside those who are hurting, and who refuses to look away from injustice.
It was a meaningful moment — not just for the cause, but for Stacey’s own journey toward healing and purpose.
A Story Still Being Written
Stacey’s journey is far from over. In many ways, it is just beginning. With new credentials, renewed confidence, and a heart full of purpose, she is stepping into a future that looks very different from the one she feared she might be stuck in.
