From High School Senior to Emergency Room Nurse: How Maddy Achieved Her Nursing Dream with WIOA Support

A Clear Vision for the Future

When Maddy entered our WIOA program, she was a high school senior with a clear goal: become a Registered Nurse and build a meaningful career helping others. She knew nursing would provide an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives while creating a stable and rewarding future for herself.

Like many students pursuing healthcare careers, Maddy’s ambition was strong, but the path ahead would require overcoming significant challenges. Between tuition costs, books, uniforms, testing fees, transportation expenses, and the demands of a rigorous nursing program, she faced obstacles that could have prevented her from reaching her goal.

Fortunately, a friend told Maddy about FSC’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, which provided the guidance, resources, and support she needed to stay focused on her dream.

Navigating Challenges Along the Way

Maddy began the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) with determination and excitement. However, balancing full-time education with employment and financial responsibilities quickly became a challenge.

Housing expenses, transportation costs, and reduced work hours due to classes and clinical requirements created financial pressure. At the same time, navigating college enrollment, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities added another layer of complexity.

One of the most difficult moments in Maddy’s journey came when she was required to retake Microbiology, a critical course in her nursing program. The setback delayed her progression through her nursing cohort and tested her confidence.

Many students might have viewed the delay as a reason to give up. Maddy chose a different path.

Instead of allowing the obstacle to derail her plans, she leaned into the support available to her. She worked closely with instructors and advisors, utilized academic coaching resources, and remained committed to her long-term goal.

“Becoming a nurse has always been my goal,” Maddy said. “There were times during school when I felt overwhelmed, but I knew I wanted a career where I could help people and create a stable future for myself. I’m proud that I stayed focused and achieved my dream.”

The Power of WIOA Support

Throughout her educational journey, FSC’s WIOA program provided comprehensive support designed to help her succeed.

Maddy received assistance with educational planning, FAFSA navigation, scholarship opportunities, career counseling, and employment planning. WIOA also helped alleviate financial burdens through supportive services, mileage assistance, direct reimbursements, and ongoing case management.

Equally important was the encouragement and accountability she received throughout the program. Regular academic monitoring and guidance helped ensure she remained on track, even during the most challenging periods of her training.

Maddy’s WIOA Career Services Specialist, Megan, described her as “hardworking, determined, and highly motivated to improve her future through education and employment. She consistently demonstrated a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to seek help when needed. Maddy remained focused on her goals despite challenges and showed resilience throughout her training.”

A Life-Changing Achievement

Maddy’s perseverance paid off. She successfully completed the ADN program, earned her nursing credential, passed the NCLEX examination, and secured full-time employment as a Registered Nurse in an Emergency Department.

The impact extended far beyond a new job title. Since enrolling in the program, Maddy increased her earnings by approximately $20 per hour, achieved financial independence, and established a stable career in one of the nation’s most in-demand fields.

Today, she is living independently, supporting herself, and making a difference in the lives of patients every day. Yet Maddy’s journey isn’t over.

She plans to continue working as a Registered Nurse while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, creating even more opportunities for professional growth and advancement within healthcare.

Your Career Goals Are Within Reach

Maddy’s story demonstrates what can happen when determination meets the right support system. Through hard work, resilience, and assistance from FSC’s WIOA program, she transformed from a student preparing for college into a licensed healthcare professional with a clear path toward continued success.
