When Clarence enrolled in our Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, he was dreaming of becoming a professional truck driver – but at the moment, he was living in his car. Clarence relied on friends for a place to stay whenever possible and did not always know where his next meal would come from. Although the road ahead was unclear, he saw himself driving toward a better future and was willing to put in the work to get there.
Before Clarence could even begin CDL training, he faced a series of complicated hurdles, including resolving licensing issues in two different states and obtaining numerous documents required for enrollment. The process was lengthy and often frustrating, but Clarence refused to give up.
His determination impressed everyone who worked alongside him.
Determination That Never Wavered
WIOA Career Services Specialist Paige still remembers meeting Clarence on her very first day with Forward Service Corporation.
“Clarence was the first participant I met on my first day of work as a CSS with FSC,” she recalls. “Jumping right into the deep end, Clarence’s personality and spunk for his dreams set the stage for my enthusiasm for the new job.”
Paige quickly recognized that Clarence possessed something many people overlook during difficult circumstances: unwavering grit. “The amount of time and determination required for him to obtain all requirements to enter training was the greatest battle,” she says. “Clarence expressed a grit and determination within him that just needed to be fostered and fanned. Once he became aware of that, his confidence and determination increased tenfold, and this contributed greatly to his success.”
Together, Clarence and Paige carefully mapped out every step needed to remove the barriers standing between him and his future career.
Support That Extended Beyond the Classroom
Once Clarence met all of the enrollment requirements, WIOA funded his Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training at Midwest Truck Driving School. The rigorous program demanded focus, discipline, and perseverance, but Clarence embraced every challenge with the same determination that had carried him through months of preparation.
Throughout his journey, WIOA provided much more than tuition assistance. Clarence received career services, case management, and support services that helped him meet both training and employment requirements. Just as important, he had a team of people who believed in him.
“Clarence and I kept very close and constant communication,” she explains. “He was reassured that I was reachable and determined to aid in his success in any way possible. This opened the doors for honest communication as he navigated heavier waters throughout his training.”
Clarence also found strong advocates at Midwest Truck Driving School. The instructors remained in close contact with him before and during training, making themselves available even outside regular business hours to help him work through challenges.
A Team That Believed in His Future
Clarence is quick to recognize that many people helped him reach the finish line. Before Paige became his Career Services Specialist, WIOA staff member Zana encouraged him to stay committed to the program through her compassionate, face-to-face support during a difficult period.
As Clarence progressed, his appreciation for the support he received became impossible to hide. In one message to Paige, he wrote:
“Paige, you are a rockstar! I don’t know what I’m going to do when I leave this program because literally I asked you for a need and you got it. You are amazing! I am the luckiest client here and I’m going to make you proud.”
His words reflected the trust, encouragement, and partnership that had become the foundation of his success.
Building a Brighter Future
Shortly after graduating with his Class A CDL, Clarence secured employment with a trucking company, turning years of determination into a rewarding career.
Today, he enjoys greater financial stability and the opportunity to build the future he envisioned even while living in his car. His story is a powerful reminder that difficult circumstances do not define a person’s potential. With perseverance, the right resources, and people who believe in them, individuals can overcome extraordinary barriers and create lasting change.
