I was able to get my life back together thanks to all the support I have received
After spending two years incarcerated, Arlow faced the daunting challenge of starting over. Before his sentence, he lived a stable life in Winnebago County—working full time, renting a home, and owning a vehicle. But upon his release, he had lost everything. He was homeless, disconnected from family, and burdened with self-doubt and fear of failure.
Support Begins Behind the Walls
Arlow’s turnaround began while still incarcerated, thanks to enrollment in the Pathways Home program. Recognizing his immediate needs—housing, employment, and food—program staff helped him prepare for release with practical resources: a cell phone to contact employers, gas vouchers to aid job searching, and a Goodwill Good Neighbor gift card to purchase clothing.
A New Path with FSET
Once released, Arlow was referred from his Pathways Home worker to the FSET (FoodShare Employment and Training) program. Through FSET, he received bus passes, was connected to a job developer, and gained access to group case management and open lab resources. These tools played a vital role in his job search and growing self-confidence.
Employment and Financial Progress
Arlow’s persistence paid off when he secured a job at Wald Wire through IQ Resource Group. It marked not just a financial milestone, but also a symbol of his resilience. For the first time in two years, he opened a savings account—another big step toward regaining independence.
Finding Confidence and a Clearer Vision
“I’m a lot happier now. I’m not so bummed out about my situation anymore. I feel like my life is going in the right direction, and I see a vision for myself,” Arlow said.
He added, “I feel a lot more comfortable in my own skin now. I feel more confident. I can identify all my character flaws and work on correcting them so I can make amends toward the people I have wronged and continue to move forward.”
A Spark for the Future
From a man unsure of what the future held to someone filled with clarity and drive, Arlow is a changed person. Today, his new goals are rooted in stability and joy: getting his own apartment and returning to hobbies like fishing and hunting.
His case manager noticed the change: “I can see a spark in him now that I couldn’t when he first enrolled. He is much more confident in his abilities and wants to make amends with the people he has wronged in his past.”
Resilience, Kindness, and Hope
Everyone who meets Arlow describes him as kind, hardworking, and easy to get along with. “He tries his best and works very hard. He’s really personable and always willing to help others,” shared his case manager.
A Story of Redemption Through Support
Arlow’s journey from incarceration to employment and self-assurance is a powerful reminder of the impact programs like Pathways Home and FSET can have.
“I was able to get my life back together thanks to all the support I have received,” Arlow reflected.
His story is a testament to second chances, the strength of community resources, and the human ability to rise again, stronger, clearer, and ready to give back.
