From Overwhelmed to Empowered: How Diamond Transformed Her Life Through the W-2 Program

At some point, many parents find themselves at a crossroads—balancing the demands of raising children while trying to build a career. Searching for employment during such a critical time can feel impossible.

Diamond first enrolled in our Wisconsin Works (W-2) program a few years ago, seeking assistance. But the timing wasn’t right. With a young child needing extra support and life’s pressures weighing heavily on her, she decided to pause her participation.

But that wasn’t the end of her journey—it was just the beginning.

A Fresh Start with a New Mindset

A year later, Diamond returned to the W-2 program—this time with renewed determination, clarity, and purpose. She was ready both to re-enter the workforce and to pursue a meaningful career.

During her first meeting back, Diamond connected with her W-2 case manager, Misty, who immediately recognized her motivation. Together, they completed a Life Area Survey to uncover any remaining barriers that could hold her back. Then, they mapped out Diamond’s goals and dreams, focusing on building a plan that would lead to long-term success.

Diamond had a clear vision: she wanted a stable office job with consistent hours and dependable pay. With her oldest child in school and her youngest preparing to start, she knew it was time to focus on herself and create a better future for her family.

Building Skills and Gaining Experience

To help make her vision a reality, Misty enrolled Diamond in the Office Professionals Training, a free course designed to teach essential job skills for the office environment. But with the next session delayed due to the holidays, they made an interim plan.

Misty helped Diamond secure a volunteering opportunity at Community Action, assisting in the computer lab and front desk. Diamond showed up to her interview polished and professional—instantly impressing the worksite supervisor. She shared her passion for helping others and her aspirations to grow in an office setting.

Her performance during this experience was nothing short of outstanding. Diamond demonstrated professionalism, dedication, and a sincere desire to learn—qualities that didn’t go unnoticed.

From Work Experience to Employment

Shortly after beginning the Office Professionals Training, a front desk receptionist position opened up at Community Action—the very place where she had been volunteering. Because of her excellent performance, Diamond was offered the job!

Although she had to leave the training early to start her new role, Diamond had already absorbed many valuable skills. She was finally working and thriving in the office environment.

A Career, Not Just a Job

Fast forward a year and a half, and Diamond’s journey took another exciting turn. Her consistency, professionalism, and passion for helping others paved the way for a promotion. When a job coach position opened up in the Transitional Jobs program at Community Action, Diamond applied and was hired.

Today, Diamond has her own office, her own caseload, and a job that allows her to empower others on their own employment journeys. She’s not just building a better future for herself and her children—she’s now changing lives in her community.

The Power of Perseverance and the Right Support

Diamond’s journey is a shining example of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. With the support of the W-2 program and the guidance of a dedicated case manager, she was able to overcome significant barriers and transform her life.

Her story reminds us that with the right mindset, resources, and support system, anything is possible.
