Jaclyn is living proof that hope, determination, and the right support system can change the course of a life. A naturally positive and motivated person, she has faced challenges most people can only imagine—but she has turned those challenges into stepping stones toward a brighter future.
Before coming to Pathways Home, a program operated by Forward Service Corporation (FSC) and funded by the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board, Jaclyn spent six years in prison. During that time, she made a choice—she would not let her past define her future. She learned about FSC’s programs while still incarcerated and decided to give herself the best chance of success to make good on that promise.
Taking the First Step
Jaclyn’s most urgent goal was clear: find a job that would not only support her financially, but also keep her focused on her sobriety and her mission to help others. She set her sights on becoming a Certified Peer Support Specialist—a role where she could use her lived experience to connect with and guide people on their own recovery journeys.
While still incarcerated, Jaclyn enrolled in a Certified Peer Support Specialist Training course. Thanks to Pathways Home, the training and certification exam were both fully funded. The program gave her far more than a certificate.
“She learned a lot about herself after taking the training,” says her case manager, Caylen. “I’ve seen her grow more confident since enrolling. She seems like she is really thriving, and I look forward to seeing how she continues to grow.”
Prepared for Success
By the time Jaclyn was released, she was already certified and ready to work. She immediately began applying for jobs, crafting a professional resume, and preparing for interviews. Her hard work paid off. She secured a part-time position as a Certified Peer Support Specialist at Pillars in Appleton.
Jaclyn loves her work. She meets people exactly where they are in life, offering understanding without judgment.
The Power of Support
The journey from prison to purposeful employment wasn’t without its challenges. FSC provided the extra support Jaclyn needed: gas cards to get to interviews (and now to work), ongoing job leads, and even help obtaining a free laptop through the United Way Techquity Program.
Her case manager, Caylen, met with Jaclyn one to two times per month, helping her stay on track, build professional skills, and continue growing personally. That steady encouragement kept Jaclyn moving forward.
Looking Ahead
Today, Jaclyn is focused on her next goal: saving enough money to get her own place. She’s committed to maintaining her sobriety, continuing her work in peer support, and building a stable, independent life.
Her advice to others facing obstacles is simple yet powerful: “The only time you should look back is to see how far you have come.”
Jaclyn’s story is a testament to the fact that second chances are not just possible—they can lead to incredible transformations. With determination, self-belief, and the right resources, anyone can write a new chapter.
