When Timothy enrolled in the FSET program last October, he was navigating one of the most difficult transitions of his life. After spending five years incarcerated, he was working to reenter the community, comply with probation requirements, and rebuild a stable future for himself.
At the time, Timothy was living in temporary housing and facing several barriers that could have easily discouraged him from moving forward. Although he owned a vehicle, it needed repairs before it could safely and reliably get him to interviews or future job sites. He also lacked appropriate work clothing and had not worked in the private sector since 2020.
Still, Timothy remained focused on creating a better future.
During his incarceration, he had demonstrated responsibility and motivation by maintaining employment whenever possible. He understood that returning to the workforce would require persistence, patience, and support. Referred to FSET through his IM agency, Timothy came into the program ready to work and willing to learn.
Determined to Stay on the Right Path
Despite the challenges he faced, Timothy showed accountability for his past and a strong desire to move forward in a positive direction. He openly acknowledged that some of his skills needed updating and welcomed guidance, coaching, and constructive feedback.
His goals were clear and meaningful: secure stable housing, maintain steady employment, and continue building a positive and productive future.
FSET staff recognized Timothy’s determination immediately. Through individualized coaching, the program focused on rebuilding his confidence and helping him prepare for today’s job market. Staff worked with him on resume development, interview preparation, employment search strategies, and soft skills training to help him present himself effectively to employers.
Most importantly, Timothy stayed committed to the process even when the journey became difficult.
Overcoming Barriers With Support and Persistence
For many individuals reentering the workforce after incarceration, the barriers can feel overwhelming. Transportation issues, limited recent work history, and lack of professional resources often make finding employment challenging.
FSET helped Timothy address those barriers directly.
The program provided supportive services that allowed him to pursue opportunities with dignity and confidence. Timothy received assistance with work clothing, gas cards for transportation to interviews and work-related activities, and repairs to his vehicle to ensure safe and dependable transportation.
These supports made a meaningful difference. Instead of being held back by obstacles, Timothy could focus on finding employment and preparing for long-term success.
The process was not always easy. Timothy faced multiple rejections while applying for jobs, but he refused to give up.
His FSET Case Manager, Karen, witnessed his perseverance firsthand.
“After Tim secured employment, I observed a noticeable and positive change in his attitude and self-confidence,” Karen says. “He began to believe that he could truly make a difference in his own life. Despite receiving multiple rejections while applying for positions, Tim remained persistent and did not give up.”
She adds, “Tim is taking his life seriously and demonstrated determination by continuing to pursue opportunities until he found what he needed to begin rebuilding his life and moving forward in the community.”
A Future Built on Stability and Growth
Today, Timothy is employed and continuing to build momentum toward the future he wants for himself.
His goals extend far beyond simply finding a job.
“Looking ahead, my goals are simple but meaningful,” Timothy says. “I want to own my own home, stay steadily employed, and continue growing in my career—working my way up into a supervisor or management role. Most importantly, I’m focused on staying on the right path and staying out of trouble as I build a better future for myself.”
He also hopes to use his experiences to help others.
“I want to give back to the community that helped me,” he says. “The struggle was real, but I learned you can’t give up, even when you hit roadblocks.”
Through determination, accountability, and the support of the FSET program, Timothy is proving that a second chance can become the foundation for lasting success.
