From Struggle to Strength: Jesse’s Journey to Helping Others

As a new father, this support was invaluable.

Stories of transformation and resilience unfold every day. In Winnebago County, one such story is Jesse’s—a man who turned his struggles into a mission to uplift others. His journey, supported by Forward Service Corporation’s WIOA program, is an inspiring testament to the power of second chances and self-determination.

Overcoming the Past to Build a Brighter Future

Jesse’s early life was marked by significant challenges, including substance abuse and mental health struggles. These difficulties led to nearly a third of his life spent incarcerated. However, almost four years ago, he made what he calls “a pivotal decision to reach out for help, changing the course of my life.”

Through the Winnebago County Drug Court program, Jesse not only found sobriety but also discovered a passion for helping others—particularly youth who faced similar struggles.

Finding Purpose Through Education

Determined to use his experiences for good, Jesse aspired to become a Substance Use Disorder Counselor. However, his first attempt at enrolling in school was met with rejection.

“I applied to a school but was denied due to my background, which left me feeling discouraged,” Jesse recalls. “The stigma I faced as someone with lived experience led to deep feelings of shame and rejection, which I let hold me back.”

But he refused to let this setback define his future. Encouraged by a friend, Jesse applied again—this time at Northcentral Technical College, where he was accepted into the Substance Use Disorder Counseling program.

“I realized then that I wasn’t going to let my past define me or let what someone thinks of it stop me from pursuing what I feel like I am meant to do,” Jesse says. “I applied at another school and was accepted.”

The Support That Made It Possible

As a new father and a dedicated student, Jesse needed financial assistance to make his education possible. That’s when he found Forward Service Corporation’s WIOA program, which helped cover his tuition and school expenses.

“As a new father, this support was invaluable, and I am incredibly grateful for the program and the support that I have received from them,” Jesse expresses.

With this support, Jesse has not only continued his education but has also earned additional certifications through his job to expand his skills and knowledge.

A Future of Giving Back

Jesse’s journey is far from over. His goals now include maintaining his current job, continuing his education, and, most importantly, using his story to help others rise above their circumstances.

“Through Drug Court, I discovered I had a passion for helping others, especially youth, seeing that my struggles started during my teenage years,” he explains. “I want to help people rise above.”

With his unwavering determination and the right support, Jesse is proving that no past is too broken to build a better future.
