From Struggles to Scrubs: Kortney’s Journey from Student to Registered Nurse Through WIOA

“I am so grateful for everything you have done for me, Megan, and how much WIOA has helped me in my journey. I appreciate the support more than words can say.”

In the heart of Oconto County, a young woman named Kortney set out to change her life. Facing medical and mental health challenges, financial instability, and uncertainty about the future, she needed more than a plan—she needed a community that believed in her. Through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, Kortney found just that.

A Difficult Starting Point

Kortney was still in high school when she first connected with the WIOA program (funded by the Bay Area Workforce Development Board), referred by mentors at Bellin Hospital and Lena High School. She was dealing with the kind of pressures that would overwhelm most people: severe health issues, financial hardship, unstable housing, and the mental weight of navigating it all alone. What she needed was support across the board—mental health services, job guidance, financial literacy, and someone who would walk alongside her.

Dreams That Seemed Far Away—Until They Weren’t

Despite the weight she carried, Kortney never lost sight of her dreams. She wanted to become a registered nurse, live independently, achieve financial stability, and build a meaningful career. These goals weren’t abstract—they were rooted in her deep desire to care for others and contribute to her community.

With support from her Career Services Specialist and the WIOA program, Kortney’s roadmap began to take shape. Together, they tackled her immediate needs: securing housing, navigating financial aid, improving her mental health, and identifying clear steps toward her nursing career.

From CNA to RN—A Milestone Journey

Kortney’s career path began as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), then progressed to a Student Nurse Tech position at Bellin Health. With each step, she gained confidence and clarity. She graduated with highest honors, earned a competitive technical education scholarship, and passed her NCLEX exam on the first attempt—officially becoming a Registered Nurse.

She recently accepted a full-time position as an Acute Care RN. What once felt like a dream is now her everyday reality.

A Leader in the Making—On and Off the Clock

Kortney’s impact goes far beyond the hospital walls. Throughout her time in the WIOA program, she consistently showed up for others. She volunteered at more than 10 community events, mentored peers, and personally referred over 20 friends and family members to WIOA—wanting others to access the same life-changing support she received.

Her calm confidence, grounded gratitude, and servant-hearted leadership make her a standout in every setting. Kortney doesn’t just work to succeed—she lifts others as she climbs.

A Remarkable Transformation

When Kortney began her journey, she was full of potential but still finding her voice. Today, she speaks with confidence, leads with empathy, and advocates fiercely—for herself and for others. She’s become a role model in her community, the kind of neighbor and nurse every town dreams of.

Her next goal? To travel the world and soak in everything life has to offer—a well-earned adventure after years of hard work.

The Power of Belief, Community, and Resilience

Kortney’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when determination meets the right support system. WIOA provided the tools—but it was Kortney’s grit, grace, and giving spirit that turned a hard beginning into a hopeful, purpose-driven future.

Congratulations, Kortney. You are the embodiment of everything WIOA stands for—and the difference one empowered individual can make.
