From Temp Jobs to Triumph: Bruce’s Highway to Success with HCST

A Struggle for Stability

Bruce’s story is a powerful testament to perseverance and the transformative opportunities provided by the Highway and Construction Skills Training (HCST) program. When Bruce first considered enrolling in HCST, he was stuck in a cycle of temporary factory jobs. These roles offered low pay, no benefits, and little to no stability.

“I got jobs – usually working factory jobs. It was hard, though, because the jobs never offered good pay. Temp jobs just don’t give you enough money; and I have kids. I just couldn’t afford anything,” Bruce shared. The uncertainty of temporary work left him scrambling to support his family and constantly starting over at new workplaces.

Setting Clear Goals

Determined to break free from this cycle, Bruce set a clear goal: to find permanent employment that offered good pay and benefits.

“My biggest challenge when I enrolled was to find a good job where I could make enough money to pay for my bills. Those jobs just didn’t seem to be out there. How could I take care of my family when no one was giving me a chance?” he reflected.

The Turning Point

Enrolling in HCST proved to be the turning point Bruce needed. He attributes much of his positive experience to the program’s instructor, Lorie.

“My favorite thing about class was Lorie. She taught the class all the things we needed to know and helped to prepare us for the construction field. I really appreciated her,” Bruce said. Through HCST, he gained valuable knowledge, honed his skills, and prepared for a career in construction.

Success and Stability

Bruce’s hard work and commitment paid off. He transitioned into a role that not only aligned with his passions but also provided the financial stability he had been striving for.

“Things have changed because now I am doing something I like, and getting paid well to do it. The fact that I can do something I love is good enough,” Bruce said, with pride evident in his words.

The Moment of Realization

The moment Bruce realized he had achieved success came early in his new job. “I knew this was something I’d love to do when I started learning things on the job. It was all stuff I knew how to do and could do well. And then I saw my paychecks. That made it even better.”

Beyond the paychecks, Bruce found fulfillment in his ability to provide for his family. “It means a lot. I feel good about what I can do for my kids,” he shared.

Advice for Aspiring Construction Workers

Bruce’s story underscores the power of determination and the right support system. His advice for anyone considering a career in construction is simple yet profound: “If you think you’ll like construction, try it. Work hard. Believe in yourself.”

A Coordinated Effort

According to his supportive services coordinator, Bruce’s journey exemplifies the strength of character and resilience that HCST seeks to foster in its participants. Despite juggling numerous challenges, Bruce demonstrated strong communication skills, reliability, and motivation—traits that have made him an asset in the construction field.
