When Griffyn joined the WIOA Youth Program, he was working as a plumbing apprentice earning $10 an hour. The job offered hands-on experience, but the environment lacked the support he needed to thrive. Feeling discouraged and unsure of his future in the trades, Griffyn knew it was time for a change.
Finding the Right Fit in the Skilled Trades
With support from his career planner and FSC’s local connections, Griffyn took time to reflect on his strengths and explore new career options. Through job shadowing and informational interviews across a variety of skilled trades, he began to see a clearer path forward.
A turning point came when he met a trades professional who had completed the Gas Utility Program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC). That connection sparked a new vision for Griffyn’s future—and he pursued it with determination.
Education and Credentials That Paved the Way
Griffyn enrolled in NWTC’s Gas Utility Program and fully committed to his new path. Through hard work and a passion for learning, he earned multiple industry-recognized credentials:
- Associate Degree in Gas Utility – Graduated with High Honors
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Industrial Fundamentals Certificate
- Stick and TIG Welding Certifications
Most significantly, Griffyn’s wage increased from $10/hour to a sustainable wage, and he is now employed full-time with NPS in New Berlin, Wisconsin.
A New Life and a Stronger Community
Today, Griffyn lives independently with friends he met during the program. He’s part of a supportive network of skilled professionals who share his values and ambitions. He remains connected to his FSC mentors and has even become a mentor himself—offering guidance and encouragement to other young adults in transition.
Advocating for Mental Wellness in the Trades
Griffyn isn’t just building a career—he’s helping build awareness. He now speaks to high school students, including at Oconto High School, where he shares his journey and encourages others to explore careers that align with their goals. He is especially passionate about mental health in the trades, working to reduce stigma and emphasize that seeking support is a strength—not a weakness.
