Alyssa is a brave young woman with dreams that shimmer just out of reach. Entering adulthood, she finds herself navigating a challenging chapter in her life—balancing the responsibilities of being a new single mother while confronting her anxiety, pursuing her High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), and landing her first job. Living with her parents in Wisconsin has offered her some stability, but deep down, Alyssa longs for independence and the ability to provide a fulfilling life for her child.
The journey has not been easy. Like many young adults, Alyssa faced the daunting task of entering the workforce without a high school diploma. But her determination and creativity shine brightly, fueled by her love for the arts and cosmetology—fields she dreams of breaking into someday. Yet, as she battles anxiety that often feels insurmountable, the road ahead can appear blurry and overwhelming.
This is where Wisconsin Works (W-2) steps in, becoming a beacon of hope for Alyssa and others facing similar struggles. The program is designed to assist individuals by providing various resources, including access to vocational training, educational support, and employment services. Alyssa joined W-2 in search of maternity assistance but quickly discovered that it offers much more — opportunities for growth, mentorship, and community support.
With the guidance of her Wisconsin Works team, Alyssa embarked on a journey to earn her HSED—a critical first step toward her dream job. The program offers flexible learning options that accommodated her parenting responsibilities while allowing her to focus on her studies. She met with Rich, her Education Navigator, virtually for academic guidance, encouragement, and school supplies – including the laptop we lent her for school. Every day, she carved out time to study, while her baby peacefully napped. Despite the challenges, Alyssa has embraced this phase of her life like a canvas waiting for vibrant strokes. With each completed assignment, she gained confidence and motivation, inching closer to her diploma and her dreams.
Through this journey, Alyssa learned that reaching out is not a weakness but a testament to courage. By looking to her community, she got the resources to become stronger, including a wider support network. Danielle, her W-2 case manager, ensured she had the foundations for success. In addition to the educational resources, Danielle connected Alyssa to healthcare resources and gas vouchers. She was Alyssa’s guide as they crafted the plan they’re still working on today.
Now, Alyssa has her HSED and is working on the next step of her journey toward independence: earning her driver’s license.
As she balances her studies, parenting, and preparation for her future career, Alyssa blooms—each baby step leading her closer to a life of independence for herself and her child. The support from W-2 transforms into a foundation on which she can build her future.
Alyssa is not just the hero of her story; she is an inspiration to others. Her journey illustrates that with perseverance and the right support, dreams can become a reality. Young adults like Alyssa can find hope and empowerment, proving that even amid struggles, the path to a brighter future is within reach.
