How Troy Turned His Life Around to Help Others in Recovery: A Story of Perseverance and Purpose

I can finally take pride in my achievements again!

In May 2024, Troy took a life-changing step by joining the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, making use of their Support to Communities (STC) grant. A recovering addict, Troy had worked in the field of recovery but wanted to deepen his expertise to make an even bigger impact. His goal? To become a certified recovery coach and provide support for those struggling with substance use disorders.

Overcoming Challenges
Before enrolling in the WIOA program, Troy faced numerous challenges. While he had firsthand experience in the recovery community, he aspired to grow further—to gain formal training and licensure to guide others with his newfound knowledge and compassion. However, paying for the necessary coursework was a significant hurdle.

Thanks to the STC grant, Troy enrolled in the Certified Professional Recovery Coach program through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). This opportunity enabled him to pursue his passion and build on his personal experiences to better support others.

Empowered Through Education
With the support of WIOA Career Specialists, Troy received guidance on every step of his educational journey—from career assessments to applying for financial aid and enrolling in school. “I’ve learned a lot so far! This training has been much better than what I originally learned,” Troy shared during one of his monthly check-ins.

Balancing two jobs while attending school, Troy remained dedicated to his goal, ready to invest his time and energy to become a certified recovery coach. This journey was not just about acquiring new skills; it was about reclaiming his sense of purpose and giving back to his community.

A New Beginning and Impactful Career in Recovery Coaching
Soon, Troy will graduate, feeling confident and prepared to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others facing addiction. His dedication and commitment have empowered him to create lasting change, one client at a time.

As he puts it, “I am passionate about helping other addicts achieve and maintain sobriety like I have. I’m a recovering addict who lost everything, so without the grant, I would not have been able to take the class.”

With a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment, Troy is already seeing the impact of his work: “The skills I am learning through the class are helping me keep my clients longer, saving people’s lives, and making the community a safer place to live. I can finally take pride in my achievements again!”

Building a Brighter Future in Outagamie County
Troy’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and support. Through the STC grant and WIOA program, he has transformed his life and will soon hold the credentials to guide others on their recovery journeys. His journey reminds us that no matter where we start, with the right resources and determination, we can turn our lives around and inspire others to do the same.
