Jerry’s Road to Stability: Finding New Beginnings with Highway Construction Skills Training (HCST)

It’s given me money, a future, and peace of mind. I feel better about who I am

For many, finding the right career path can be a long and challenging journey. Jerry’s experience was no different. After years of struggling with temporary jobs that offered no stability or benefits, he was ready for a change. With a renewed drive for something permanent, he enrolled in the Highway Construction Skills Training (HCST) program, hoping it would help him take control of his future. Jerry’s story is a powerful example of how dedication and the right resources can turn lives around.

Why Jerry Chose HCST: The Need for a Change

For Jerry, life was at a standstill. He had been working temporary jobs that offered little in terms of financial security or long-term employment. When a medical issue forced him to take a break from work, the few career opportunities he had disappeared. It was time for a change.

“I just couldn’t get ahead; it was rough. I figured the HCST program sounded like a place that could help point me in the right direction,” Jerry shared.

The HCST program offered exactly what Jerry was looking for—a path to a sustainable career in highway construction that could provide financial security and employment stability.

Facing Challenges with Determination

Enrolling in the program was easy, but there were barriers. Getting to class every day posed a challenge since Jerry shared a single vehicle with his girlfriend. Sometimes, this meant relying on shared rides and spending long hours waiting for class to start. Yet, Jerry’s commitment never wavered, and he found ways to make it work.

“I had to arrange and share rides sometimes because we only had one car. I’d get dropped off early and wait around until class started,” he explained. “It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.”

Setting New Goals

Jerry’s primary goal was clear: he wanted a stable job and a fresh start. More than that, he wanted to lead a better quality of life. Enrolling in the HCST program helped him take that first step, and each class brought him closer to achieving his vision.

Eye-Opening Experiences and Support

Jerry found immense value in HCST’s practical, hands-on approach. Lorie, his instructor, offered unrelenting support and brought in industry professionals who shared real-world insights. These experiences made Jerry realize he could transform his life through hard work and dedication.

“The class really helped open my eyes and motivated me to put in the effort to change my life. Changing isn’t easy and it’s uncomfortable, but the class and Lorie showed me there’s another option.”

How HCST Improved Jerry’s Situation

Today, Jerry’s life has changed for the better. He can contribute financially to his household, easing the burden on his girlfriend and building a stable future for them both. His new job has given him not only a paycheck but also a renewed sense of self-worth.

“I have money to keep up with the bills and a bit in my pocket. That’s a great change! It helps me to feel better about myself,” he explained.

Defining Success: Confidence in a New Career

For Jerry, success became real when he received his first job offer—no questions asked, no interview necessary. The union hall called him to report to work, and he seized the opportunity without hesitation.

“When I was offered the job, I was nervous, but I showed up and have been doing well since day one.”

What This Job Means to Jerry

More than financial stability, Jerry’s job has brought him a sense of peace and accomplishment. It has given him hope for a better future and pride in his ability to overcome obstacles.

“It’s given me money, a future, and peace of mind. I feel better about who I am,” he said.

Jerry’s Tips for Success in the Construction Field

Jerry encourages anyone considering a career in construction to stay committed and ask questions. His advice reflects the values that guided him throughout his journey in HCST:

“Attend the class. Just tough it out. Ask everyone questions about things you don’t understand—ask Lorie, the class visitors, and trainers. Be respectful. Be on time. Because no one is going to care more about you than you. And that’s the way it should be.”

Training Coordinator’s Reflection

Jerry’s Training Coordinator saw his potential from the start. With a background in service and manufacturing, Jerry brought a positive attitude and a strong work ethic to the program. Despite the challenges he faced, he maintained a determination to succeed and showed respect and support to his classmates.

“Jerry always had a positive attitude, which helped him excel. I was confident he’d do well in the construction industry because he never saw himself as a quitter,” his Coordinator shared.
