In the mid-1990s, Mercyhealth president/CEO Javon R. Bea noticed that many families seeking treatment at Mercyhealth’s emergency department listed their family car as their address. He knew Mercyhealth could do more than tend to their health care needs. After researching the level of homelessness in the area and finding a desperate need for emergency shelter, he developed a vision, which resulted in the opening and naming of the House of Mercy Homeless Center in August 1996.
