Rising Above: How Sabrina Became a Nurse, Debt-Free and Full of Purpose

Very awesome, very helpful, a great comfort during school, My CSS alleviated financial stress and helped me focus on school to be successful. So great to know that I do not have huge debt. Without WIOA, I would have struggled immensely—mentally and financially.

When Sabrina first walked through the doors of our office, she carried more than just the weight of textbooks. Referred by NWTC Oconto Falls, Sabrina came to us carrying challenges most would find overwhelming: housing insecurity, unreliable transportation, financial hardship, and the pressure of school.

But Sabrina brought something even greater than her struggles—a dream. A dream to become a registered nurse, to change lives, and to find healing through helping others.

And she never let go of it.

The Power of Belief and Support

That dream was ignited, not extinguished, when she met Career Services Specialist (CSS) Megan—a mentor, advocate, and ally who stood beside her through every step.

With Megan’s guidance, Sabrina was enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and Collaboration of Wisconsin (COW) programs, unlocking a network of support and funding that would help turn her vision into a reality.

A Journey Toward Freedom—Financial and Personal

Through working with WIOA, Sabrina was able to do more than just stay in school. She was able to check numerous things off her to-do list. She:

  • Purchased a reliable vehicle
  • Found a safe and stable place to live
  • Received food assistance from Paul’s Pantry and DVR
  • Covered essential school costs like books, scrubs, tools, and gas
  • Got help with car repairs, healthcare expenses

Every dollar, every bit of support, was a brick in the foundation she was building—not just for a career, but for a better life. Megan even helped Sabrina navigate a FAFSA appeal, apply for scholarships, craft a professional resume, and prepare for job interviews—empowering her every step of the way.

Because of that support, Sabrina didn’t just find a job. She found a purpose-aligned role as a CNA at Bellin, one that respected her school schedule and paid a livable wage.

Her care and dedication didn’t go unnoticed. While working in a local nursing home, she provided compassionate care to the parents of a regional director—a powerful reminder of just how deeply her calling reaches others.

The Road Ahead: Fueled by Purpose and Passion

Now, Sabrina has her sights set even higher. Last December, we’re thrilled to report, Sabrina passed her NCLEX exam and became a Registered Nurse! Since working with WIOA, she’s been promoted from CNA to LPN to RN, and WIOA was there every step of the way to support her laddering to a wage that was worth her talent. She’s now working toward saving to buy a home for herself—and her new puppy.

Her confidence is growing. Her heart is healing. And her passion for helping others has never been stronger.

More Than a Success Story—A Beacon of Hope

With the guidance of WIOA program, the steady encouragement of her Career Services Specialist and ample determination – Sabrina turned a dream into reality without student debt and without giving up.

Her journey is proof: You are not your past. You are your passion, your potential, and your power to rise.
