Susan Studies Up

Susan was a new mother again with her sixth child. She was already familiar with the challenges of motherhood, but now the financial burden of her household’s utilities carried an even heavier weight. She knew she had to act fast to remedy the situation and make sure her family was taken care of.

She decided to join our Wisconsin Works (W-2) program, where she was able to access Emergency Assistance services to get her caught up with bills. Though a small victory, it was enough to allow Susan to think a little about her future for herself and her family.

Susan has always been an avid animal lover. She dreamed of becoming a Veterinarian Technician so she could help animals in need. She knew that going back to school would put her on the path to making her dream job a reality. Her first step was to get her High School Diploma, but as a new mom, this seemed more daunting than she’d like to admit.

She met with her W-2 Case Manager, Karen, to talk about her options and how realistic it would be to get her diploma with a new little baby on her mind. Karen connected her to our Education Navigators team to see where she was at with this goal. They gathered up her previous transcripts, evaluated her credits and skills and created a plan that would set her up for success. In fact, Susan’s diploma was closer in reach than she thought!

Susan worked hard with her new team to study and prepare for the test, and in less than three months she passed with flying colors!

Getting her HSED opened a whole new world for Susan. So much so that she landed a great job that supports her family. She even has a newfound confidence that she can go back to school and actually achieve her dream.

Susan is very excited about her future and where she can go from here. She’s happy to show her children how important education is to achieve your goals in life.

Congratulations, Susan! We can’t wait to see what you do next!
