The Power of Support: How FSET Helped Damon Gain Confidence, Employment, and a Fresh Start

At 18 years old, Damon was facing challenges that would feel overwhelming to anyone. He had never had a job. He didn’t have a driver’s license, a high school diploma, or even the documents needed to apply for work like a birth certificate and social security card. He was also without stable housing, struggling to figure out where to begin.

When Damon was referred to the FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) program by his probation office, it could have been just another appointment on his calendar. Instead, it became a turning point in his life.

Finding Stability and Support

Damon chose to move back home with his dad, giving him a base of stability. Around the same time, he began working with his case manager, Morgan, through FSET. From the start, Morgan made sure Damon knew he wasn’t alone. Together, they created a step-by-step plan to help him rebuild—focusing not just on paperwork and job applications, but also on building Damon’s confidence and sense of direction.

Their first steps were foundational: gathering the documents needed for employment, enrolling in driver’s education, and starting the journey toward his High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). FSET also provided gas vouchers, making it possible for Damon to attend driving practice and job interviews.

Building Skills and Confidence

Damon didn’t just show up—he committed. Every week, he studied for his HSED at the FSC office. Morgan also connected him with ADVOCAP tutors, who worked with him several times a week. With consistent effort, Damon’s confidence grew.

It wasn’t long before he reached a big milestone: landing his very first job at a local restaurant. For Damon, this was more than a paycheck. It was the beginning of independence, a way to start saving for the future, and a chance to prove to himself that he could succeed.

Now, Damon is just one civics test away from earning his HSED. His next dream is to continue working, keep saving, and move into an apartment of his own.

Morgan’s Perspective on Damon’s Journey

Morgan describes Damon as “a fantastic participant who listened to feedback and used it to better his choices.” She saw in him qualities that shined brighter the more he worked on himself: kindness, patience, loyalty, and dedication.

She also noted his strong time management skills. Damon never missed an appointment and always put in the effort to follow through. Over time, Morgan witnessed his transformation firsthand: “I saw so much maturity, honesty, confidence, and self-efficiency develop in Damon while he was pursuing his goals.”

What Damon’s Story Teaches Us

Damon’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people are given the tools and support to succeed. The FSET program didn’t just provide resources: it gave Damon hope, direction, and a chance to see his own potential.

At its heart, FSET is about second chances, fresh starts, and helping people believe in themselves again. Damon’s story shows that no matter how difficult the beginning, a brighter future is always possible.

A Future Full of Possibility

Today, Damon is filled with hope and determination. He has goals, a plan, and the confidence to keep moving forward. His story inspires us all to remember that change is possible, and with the right support, anyone can turn a fresh start into a success story.
