Upward Bound East Students Explore Wisconsin Colleges and Careers

Through academic support, college tours, cultural enrichment, and summer learning opportunities, our Upward Bound program gives students the tools, resources, and confidence they need to pursue higher education.

This July, students in the Upward Bound East program had an exciting and enriching summer experience as they toured colleges, explored career pathways, and participated in hands-on STEM learning throughout Wisconsin. The tour gave students a behind-the-scenes look at aviation, physics, engineering, and college life—all while having fun and bonding with their peers.

Aviation Takes Off at FVTC

The journey kicked off with a visit to Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC), where students got an up-close look at their aviation programs. From walking through airplane hangars to trying their hand at riveting and even starting a test engine, the day was full of excitement and discovery. The visit offered a rare behind-the-scenes look that truly sparked interest in aviation careers.

Engineering and Exploration in Milwaukee

An early start took students to Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), where they explored high-tech lab spaces and got a glimpse of campus life. Afterward, they enjoyed lunch at the Milwaukee Public Market, a vibrant hub filled with food stalls offering everything from sushi to BBQ to sweet treats like macaroons.

Learning the Forces of Flight

Back on campus, the students delved into the science of flight. After learning about the four forces that keep planes airborne, they constructed their own motorized flight kits, which could be controlled via smartphone. Indoors and outdoors, students tested their planes with wind and teamwork. The highlight? Watching their counselors launch one so far that it disappeared beyond the building—”somewhere in Missouri,” joked the group.

Wonders of Physics

STEM excitement continued with a Badger Talks presentation titled The Wonders of Physics. Students got to witness thrilling experiments and even saw one of their own instructors take part in the action. The session sparked curiosity and made science feel accessible and fun.

A Strong Finish at UWSP

The tour wrapped up with a visit to University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point (UWSP), where the admissions team went above and beyond. In addition to a campus tour, students participated in a student Q&A and heard from guest speakers in the Health and Natural Sciences departments. Though it extended their day, the students appreciated the extra time and effort UWSP put into their visit.

The students are just half way through their summer, and they’re not done just yet!
