Joshua Can Fix It

Joshua proudly holds his CDL training certificate.

With the right tools, Joshua can fix just about anything. With over 30 years working in maintenance, that’s what he’s great at. And he used to make a decent living doing it.

For the past several years, though, Joshua’s employer-based insurance cost has increased more than his raise. With rising inflation, that meant that Joshua needed to take a part-time job to support his family. He worked weekends and even used his vacation time from one job to work the part-time hours for another.

“This left me feeling stuck and broke!” he says. Sleep-deprived and frustrated, Joshua knew that he deserved a better career after proving himself for so long. If he couldn’t get a better life staying with his employer, though, it was time to look for a better option.

Joshua drove truck on the side. Maybe getting his CDL would put a better career within reach.

“With the help I received [from Forward Service Corporation], I was able to obtain my CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) and get a job to fill my financial needs,” says Joshua. He worked with us to explore his training options and relieve the cost of tuition, through our programs, the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) and Worker Advancement Initiative (WAI).

With the right tools, now Joshua was ready to fix his own life. In just fifteen days, he earned his CDL!

With better career options ahead, Joshua is already breathing a little easier than he was a few weeks ago. He’s driving part-time while we work together to find a full-time opening. And for the first time in a while, he has hope that he’ll be able to provide meaningfully for his family again.

“Who knows?” he says. “If this new job works, I may even be able to quit my old one and support my family with one job again. Thank you for your help.”

Congratulations, Joshua!
