As Lawanda will tell you, Wisconsin Works helps build strong families. From living with her family in the back of a truck a year ago, she now has a promising healthcare career, is living in a house, and saw her children get top grades in school. This journey wasn’t easy, but with some help from W-2 staff, Lawanda put in the work to make her dreams a reality.
Lawanda started her new life by learning about programs to help her children while she was looking for a job. Wisconsin Works was exactly what she needed. She earned money to support her family by looking for work and getting useful training, and she finally had the support network that she was missing after her move.
With career guidance and one-on-one attention, Lawanda jumped into workshops and job fairs. She used the agency’s computers to apply for work. Plus, co-enrolling in the FSET program gave her family access to even more personal help and resources. Her team helped her re-write her resume so it stood out better for the kind of work she wanted. All at once, the job offers started pouring in. Before, she said “it was like every job offer I applied for turned me down. Now, I’m having to turn down jobs!”
Lawanda says the personal attention she got made all the difference in her job search, because now she is starting a career in the field she always wanted. She plans to start CNA classes this fall and hopes to go to college for nursing. Seeing her family playing in a safe place with hope for the future is the best part of her success.
